End of an era

End of an era

This is the shop I’ve worked in for the past 6 years, and sadly it will be closing in the next month or so. Bag and Baggage has been a solid part of the city centre for the past 44 years and is the only independent leather goods shop left. This used to be the place to go many years ago for a lot of people, but sadly over the years the way the economy has gone has resulted in its closure.

The Thigh Gap

The Thigh Gap

Why are females so obsessed with this look right now? It’s been said by health professionals that it is almost impossible to achieve this look in a health way. There are now facebook groups, instagram accounts, tumblr accounts, etc all promoting this look and encouraging girls to get it. If you don’t have it you are labelled as “fat”.

Change in retail

I’ve been working in retail for almost 6 years and have seen a dramatic change in sales, stock and customers.
Comparing sales in 2013 to sales in 2008, there is a noticeable change. The only shops that seem to be growing are shops like primark and pound land.
In the shop I work in the average bag used to cost between £200-£300, now rarely do we get in bags over £150. Customers are not willing to spend money, unless it’s a big purchase or has a label on.
While customers aren’t happy paying for these expensive items, they’re also not happy with the quality of the cheaper items. I’ll quite often get customers commenting on how the stock has changed, everything is cheap and the quality is gone. It gets tedious explaining to them that the reason we had to change our stock, is because they weren’t happy paying the money.
In an ideal world customers would like the high quality, with the low price which just isn’t realistic.
We live in a society where people don’t have a huge amount of disposable income and prefer to keep and save their money.
